DVD Overmind is back! This week we have a ton of late summer/early fall releases set to hit store shelves. Let’s take a look:
First up, we have the futuristic sci-fi/action flick The Surrogates. The film stars Bruce Willis, and focuses on a world where we’ve created a way to make sure we never have to leave to comforts of home for the dangers of society. People have the ability to plug into a surrogate version of themselves that appears younger, sexier, and can traverse the world on its users behalf. Bruce Willis is forgoes his surrogate to solve the mystery of why a someone is dead after their surrogate was gunned down. Expect a high-octane special effects extravaganza that’ll go well with a warm bag of popcorn.
Next this week is the Drew Barrymore directed Whip It. Ellen Page stars in this coming-of-age tale about a Texas girl who decides to join a roller derby squad. Along the way, we watch as she hides this new hobby from her strict parents and moves further into the roller derby world. There’s comedy, romance, and feminism galore, so if you’re looking for something to watch on date night, consider Whip It.
Michael Jackson: This Is It is out this week as well. So if you haven’t had enough MJ crammed down your throat in the past six months, you can pick up this documentary that follows Jackson’s story as he prepared for what would’ve been the final tour of his career. Or you could avoid it and save yourself two hours.
Speaking of avoiding releases this week, you’ll also have the chance to avoid Saw VI and I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell. Saw VI is the annual trap-filled gorefest, while IHTSBIH is an extremely offensive and degrading “comedy” about the alleged adventures of blogger Tucker Max.
So there you have your major releases for the week. If I had to pick one, I’d probably go with The Surrogates. Or I’d just wait until next week for Zombieland.
