This week only brings two major releases, and they come from complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
Edge of Darkness
Directed by: Martin Campbell
Starring: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston
Plot: Mel Gibson plays a detective who’s busy investigating the death of his daughter. Along the way he starts to uncover some details about her mysterious secret life, as well as a corporate cover-up and government involvement.
Should You See It: I’m going to go with yes on this one. Gibson is usually a solid choice when you’re looking for someone to deliver the right amount of tension this film deserves. Judging from the trailers, it looks to be a decent thrill ride, with Mel channeling some of the Lethal Weapon chops that brought him so much success early on. Keep in mind this is also Gibson’s first big role since Signs back in 2002, so don’t be surprised to see a little rust. See it, but maybe wait for a matinee.
When in Rome
Directed by: Mark Steven Johnson
Starring: Kristen Bell, Josh Duhamel
Plot: Kristen Bell plays a woman who’s found herself unlucky in love. While in Rome, she decides to steal some coins from a famous fountain of love. This of course results in a long line of guys lining up around the block to be her one and only.
Should You See It: Not this weekend. I understand this is a small release weekend, and Disney was probably looking to avoid this one getting lost in the crowded Valentine’s Day mess, but I still think they should have waited. Valentine’s weekend we’ll see a couple horror films, and a rip off of Harry Potter. This would have fit in much better a couple weeks from now. I’d avoid it this weekend, but catch it when you’re looking for something light to take a date to for that special day.
Next Week: Dear John, and From Paris With Love
