Cloud Atlas is the new film from The Wachowski brothers, the team behind The Matrix trilogy, who are directing the film in conjunction with Tom Tykwer, the German director of Run Lola Run and The International. The directors are adapting the 2004 novel which was written by David Mitchell of the same title with production having commenced in September 2011 at Studio Babelsberg in Germany.
The films official synopsis reads that Cloud Atlas "is an epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution."
Cloud Atlas will feature a large ensemble cast which include Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Susan Sarandon and Ben Whishaw and has a very large budget of over $100 million.
An image released last week teased fans of the book with various artefacts strewn about the room but left the rest of us in the dark as to what Cloud Atlas will actually look like. However a new image that has been released provide some more insight will one of the images labeled as "Seoul, 2144." The movie tells six stories that span multiple continents and centuries for the large cast, who will each play mutiple roles in the film.
This dystopian future looks very bleak yet enticing and as someone who knows absolutely nothing about the book I am encouraged by these images. Production has recently wrapped on the ambitious project so expect a deluge of promotional materials to be released from the various era of the movie to reach us very soon.
You can head over to Collider to view these images, with Cloud Atlas due to be released in October 2012.
