Though the end of Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End featured Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) and his crew stealing Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp)'s ship, don't expect the animosity between the two to be a feature of the fourth film, On Stranger Tides. No, that honor goes to Ian McShane, who will be portraying a rather famous pirate villain.
McShane, a British actor most known in the U.S. for his role in Deadwood, will play Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard. He is the second new cast member to be confirmed on the film, after Penelope Cruz was cast as a Jack-like female.
It's unknown as of yet whether or not McShane's Blackbeard will have any mystical powers, but it seems a much more likely bet that he will be racing with Jack to find the Fountain of Youth, which has long been speculated to be the focus of the fourth film.
While I wasn't a big fan of the third Pirates film, I will definitely be seeing the fourth film due to McShane's involvement. McShane is a fantastic actor, and it'll be great to see the juggernaut Disney franchise take on another well-known pirate.
Filming for the movie will begin this summer in Hawaii. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be released in theaters on May 20, 2011.
