'New Moon' needs a Muse

Regardless of whether or not you like Twilight (I don't), you've got to admit that it was successful, especially in the way of soundtracks. The first film's twelve-song soundtrack was a best-seller (America's best since Chicago), and also featured a slew of fairly good songs, including "Supermassive Black Hole" by Muse, and a score by fantastically talented composer Carter Burwell (Being John Malkovich, No Country for Old Men, In Bruges). So even if the rest of Twilight didn't suit you, the well-done soundtrack should have.

New Moon hopes to follow in that vein. The track listing, which will be announced tomorrow, doesn't have as much riding on it as Twilight's did. It's almost a guaranteed sellout from that certain denomination of squealing teenage girls, even if there was nothing on the CD. Why? Because it's Twilight!

Thankfully, the soundtrack's going to have some pretty good stuff on it, apparently. In addition to songs by artists such as Death Cab for Cutie, some fairly serious artists are being rumored to be on the album -- including Radiohead's Thom Yorke.

That's right. Probably the last person you'd ever expect to contribute to a soundtrack like this (though "15 Step" was featured in Twilight), Yorke has been in talks to include a non-Radiohead solo song on the soundtrack, though it's still uncertain whether or not he will be."There's nothing to be confirmed as of yet," Yorke's spokesperson claimed.

Meanwhile, New Moon director Chris Weitz wants Muse to be on the soundtrack for the second film, and he wants something from their new album, The Resistance, which came out earlier this week in the US and the UK. It's a wonderful album, but which songs would be right for New Moon? Very few. Songs like "Uprising" and "Unnatural Selection," are great, but for an angst-filled drama about a girl getting dumped? No. And the Queen-inspired "United States of Eurasia" has no place in the soundtrack, and neither does the three-part symphony "Exogenesis." That leaves three choices for the Muse addition -- "Resistance," "Guiding Light," and "I Belong to You." Out of those, only one of these fits the tone of the film, and that's "Guiding Light," a breakup song. Seems to fit, doesn't it?

Regardless, I'll look forward with interest to tomorrow's announcement of which songs will be on the soundtrack, which will be due out October 20. What would you like to see on the soundtrack?

  1. Woah! I’m really loving the design on this web site http://www.movieovermind.com/movie-news/new-moon-needs-a-muse/496. It’s simple, yet still effective. More often than not it is challenging to acquire that perfect balance between user friendliness and appearance. I must say you’ve done a great job on this. Also, your blogging site loads very fast for me personally at Safari. Superb Blog!
