In this part of our Oscar preshow, we're going to take a look at the five nominees for Best Animated Feature, and dish on who we think will win.
As it is every year that Pixar has a nominee (which is every year), it seems that Pixar is going to take the cake with Up, which tells the story of an old man who uses balloons to make his house fly and goes out searching for the adventure that he and his late wife sought. Along the way, he is joined by Russell, a boy scout who is stranded on the house's porch when the house lifts off. As silly as this premise might sound, anyone who has seen Up knows that it's a very deep story and features emotional depth that most animated features simply do not have. It's Pixar's best film, and the only one to have been nominated for Best Picture along with best animated feature. It has the award in the bag, it seems.
But, if by some freak occurence Up doesn't take home the statuette, the award will go to Fantastic Mr. Fox, a stop-motion animated film by Wes Anderson, which features the voice acting of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, and Bill Murray. The film is a critical darling, but simply doesn't have the scale that will guarantee Up the award.
Coraline, another stop-motion tale directed by The Nightmare Before Christmas's Henry Selick, is probably going to be third in the votes (though I guess we'll never know what position it is), with Disney's The Princess and the Frog and the obscure Irish animation Secret of the Kells (which features the voice talents of Brendan Gleeson) bringing up the rear.
