Geoffrey Fletcher just won Best Adapted Screenplay for Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire. I know it wasn't what I predicted, but I'm still fine with it. I would have preferred that District 9 would have won, simply because I love the film, but Precious was probably deserving of the award as well.
This means, however, that Up in the Air isn't getting the consolation prize it could have used. It may actually walk out of the awards with absolutely nothing.
Fletcher gave the most heartfelt speech of the night thus far, and the camera zoomed in on his face for effect. I was close to tears myself, until Steve Martin leapt onstage and deadpanned, "I wrote that speech."
