It’s highly unlikely that Steven Spielberg, director of such special effect-laden extravaganzas as “Jurassic Park” and the Indiana Jones movies, will be displaying much of his trademark visual wizardry on an upcoming project. The title character is invisible.
Spielberg has signed on to direct “Harvey”, a remake of the 1950 Jimmy Stewart movie about a man who becomes friends with an invisible 6’3” rabbit. Mary Chase’s original story used the Pooka to develop themes of honesty in families and relationships by comically leading Stewart’s character into and out of trouble and almost getting him committed in a mental institution. Cinemaspy.com reports that newbie Jonathon Tropper’s script is closer to the play than the Hollywood version, hopefully indicating that this will not be another disastrous modernized “reimagined” version of a classic.
Variety has confirmed that Spielberg has already approached Tom Hanks to reprise the famous Elwood Dowd role but Hanks, already often compared to Jimmy Stewart, declined.
Recently Spielberg acted as an executive producer for the upcoming WWII mini-series “The Pacific”, the follow-up to 2001’s “Band of Brothers.”
