Picture this: it's Fall 2008 and two Warner Brothers' executives have called Christopher Nolan, the director of The Dark Knight, into their office. The WB execs are frantically trying to calculate the gross box office totals of the newest Batman flick, which had been released in July of that year. But even their fancy calculators don't go that high.
WB Exec #1: Chris, we're so happy you could stop by. Listen, man, we just want to congratulate you. Who the hell knew The Dark Knight would be so huge? With foreign grosses, we're talking over a billion dollars. A BILLION dollars! That's nuts! So to say thank you for all your hard work, we're gonna let you do a couple more movies for us. Maybe even one before you start on the next Batman. Carte blanche, man. Whatever you want to do.
Nolan: Really? Because I've got a great idea for a movie.
WB Exec #2: Absolutely [nods]. Tell us all about it.
Nolan: Ok, so I want to make a movie with Leo DiCaprio...
Fox Exec #1: Yeah, we’ll have to see if we can pry him away from Scorsese.
Nolan: We totally will. Ok, so Leo, that French chick, that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun, that pregnant girl from Juno, that British guy I like to put in all my movies and a couple other people.
WB Exec #2: Ok, that all sounds good. So what’s the movie about?
Nolan: It’s like the Matrix.
WB Exec #1: Okay.
Nolan: But not.
WB Exec #2: [nods] Right.
Nolan: But it sorta is. But not really. It’s about gravity and bouncing off walls and stuff being in your mind. That’s the Matrix part.
WB Exec #1: But you remember how the whole Matrix thing ended, don’t you, Chris? It wasn’t good at the end.
Nolan: Right, which is why this isn’t like the Matrix. But it sorta is. It’s about sh*t that happens in your mind. Like mind crimes. Your mind is the scene of the crime, you see.
WB Exec #2: Your mind is the scene of the crime?
Nolan: Exactly! Maybe your mind. Maybe my mind. Maybe DiCaprio’s mind. Who freaking knows? It’s mind crimes!
WB Exec #1: ......
WB Exec #2: I.....I, uh, think I get it.
Nolan: It’s gonna be trippy. Like Matrix trippy. But not.
WB Exec #2: Right. Ok. So, right after this whole mind crimes thing you’re going to do another Batman right?
Nolan: Totally, man. Totally. Right after I escape from DiCaprio’s mind.
And thus we have the trailer for Nolan's newest movie - Inception, which is set to be released in the summer of 2010. Yeah, I have no idea what the hell it's about either. Oh, I have no doubt it's going to be awesome, but I still don't get it. Check it out below.
